The technique for making art glass is really very simple. First a design is cut from sheets of clear and colored glass and assembled into the basic shape of the piece. The glass is placed in the kiln and fired to 1465°F for 8 to 12 hours. During that time the glass fuses smooth and flat.
Coldworking is the next step. The glass is cleaned and imperfections repaired using a diamond file or grinder.
The piece is returned to the kiln to be slumped. Sometimes called draping, slumping is the process of placing the fused glass into or over a mold which gives the glass its form and sometimes dictates its function. Slumping occurs at 1225°F and takes 7 or 8 hours.
All of my glass can be used to serve food and can be washed in the dishwasher. Fused glass should not be put in the oven or microwave. Please use the piece and enjoy it to the fullest.
It’s about color … and balance … and function
Working with glass is unpredictable and amazing.
Working with color is challenging and rewarding.
Combining glass and
color is magic.
After I began making functional glass art I realized that nothing could be more fun. And nothing
would be more unpredictable.
